How does automatic transcription work?

The improvement in AI has come in leaps and bounds over the last few years which in turn has allowed automated transcription services such as Go Transcribe to improve significantly and can now offer an accuracy rate of around 95%. Many careers still rely on transcribing audio and video and frankly it is a very time-consuming process. But now technology like Go Transcribe exists and fully automates the entire process of transcription, giving birth to the term automated transcription.

What is transcription?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines transcription as a written or typed version of something. It is usually an interview or a recording and involves listening to it (sometimes several times) and typing the contents into a document. It is often a slow and laborious process, especially if the process is being done manually.

What are the different kinds of transcription?

Manual transcription

This remains the most traditional form of transcription and involves listening to audio or video files and then typing up the contents into a document. It is the least expensive option as the cost is equivalent to an individual’s time.

Human transcription service

This is still a manual process and involves outsourcing to companies that will convert your audio/video files to text. In the case of live events, human transcribers rely on a well-versed shorthand system, which then later gets scripted fully. In terms of specialist roles such as court reporters, you rely on someone that can type really fast in real-time. This means however that there is little to no time to correct mistakes on the transcript. (Think of subtitles on live tv!)

Automated Transcription

This process involves uploading audio/video files onto an automated transcription service such as Go Transcribe, which relies on artificial intelligence (A.I.) to produce a transcript. The process is incredibly quick and a typical 30-minute audio/video can be transcribed in just a few minutes.

Aside from the speed, an added benefit of using automated transcription is security. The transcription process is done entirely by machines, which means that if the nature of the files is sensitive e.g. patient notes, you can rest assured that no one else will be able to see the transcript.

Go Transcribe makes use of the latest artificial intelligence and language processing technology to deliver an accurate automated transcript. As soon as a file has been transcribed, the user will receive a notification to say that it is ready. Having a Go Transcribe account makes it easy to access the transcript online and edit as necessary. You will also be able to share the file with other users should you wish to do so, as well as search for key terms and highlight certain points.

Whilst the automated transcription service is not fully perfect and the quality of audio file will affect the accuracy, but with a good, crisp audio quality, the accuracy of the resulting transcript can be upwards of 95%. And despite all this, the cost of automated transcription compared to human transcription remains relatively inexpensive. From as little as £10 per hour, you can receive an automated transcript with Go Transcribe, and if you use the service regularly, then the cost is even less.

The future?

Whilst the technology that allows automated transcriptions remains relatively new, it is improving day by day. As automated technology becomes more mainstream and more and more people turn to automated transcription, the speech-to-text algorithm improves leading to much more accurate transcripts.

What makes automated transcription possible?

Natural language processing (NLP) is an area within artificial intelligence that allows computers and humans to interact using the natural language I.e. human speak. The artificial intelligence then makes sense of the language by reading and deciphering it in a manner which becomes useful to the user. When a user uploads a file onto Go Transcribe, artificial intelligence processes that file and matches the sounds to our ever-growing dictionary and the outcome is a highly accurate transcript. Go Transcribe works in different languages and caters for varying English accents and continues to improve all the time.
