Words worth adding to your custom dictionary
Every language has a handful of words any engine has to guess at. In Chinese these are the usual ones. Add them to your custom dictionary once and they come back right in every transcript from then on.
| Commonly guessed | What you meant | Why they collide |
|---|---|---|
| 在座 | 再作 | Identical pronunciation, different characters, different meaning. |
| 他 | 她 | He and she sound the same and only differ in writing. |
| 事件 | 时间 | Event and time differ only in tone, and by nothing at all in a rough transcript. |
Getting the best Chinese transcript
Ask speakers to give their name and role at the start of the recording. Chinese names have many homophones, and a spoken introduction lets you attach the right characters to each speaker label in the editor in one pass.
Add product names, brand names and technical terms to your custom dictionary. Chinese has many identical-sounding syllables, and the dictionary is what tells the model which characters your industry uses.
Common questions about Chinese transcription
Who needs Chinese transcription?
International businesses running operations or supply chains in Greater China, market research agencies, universities with Chinese-language programmes, and media companies subtitling for mainland and Taiwanese audiences.
How accurate is Chinese transcription?
We estimate around 96.9% on clear, single-speaker Chinese audio. Recording quality moves that figure further than the language does, so a close microphone and one person speaking at a time is the biggest lever you have. Names, places and industry terms go into your custom dictionary once and come back right in every transcript after that.
Which Chinese accents and dialects are supported?
These varieties: Mainland Mandarin, Taiwanese Mandarin, Singapore Mandarin. The model is built for all of them, so a recording with several accents in the room is handled the same way as one without.
What is distinctive about Chinese?
Chinese is written without spaces, so where one word ends and the next begins is a decision the transcript has to make rather than something the audio tells it. The model segments the stream into words and produces characters rather than pinyin, so the transcript is readable as it stands.
Will Chinese text export correctly?
Yes. Chinese text (Simplified Han) comes through every export unchanged: Microsoft Word, PDF, plain text, and SRT, VTT and Avid DS subtitles. Text direction and diacritics survive the round trip, so a transcript opens the way it looked in the editor.
How long does Chinese transcription take?
Most transcriptions are ready in less time than the length of the file. A 60-minute recording is typically processed well under an hour, and you get an email as soon as it is ready.
Can I translate a Chinese transcript?
Yes. Pick a target language and click translate: your Chinese transcript is translated into any of 60+ languages as a full, editable document with word-level timestamps preserved, so you can export subtitles from the translation just as you would from the original.
